All Grain Beer: Theakston Old Peculiar

Old Peculiar is a wonderful beer from the town of Theakston in the UK. Unfortunately it has been nearly impossible to get here in Oregon for quite some time--likely just a distribution problem--so after a bit of research I found a 10 gallon all grain clone recipe for this brew.
  • 18 lbs Maris Otter pale malt
  • 2 lbs 80 lovibond crystal malt
  • 1 lbs torrified wheat
  • 8 oz black malt
  • 2 lbs sugar
  • 2 oz Fuggle hops at the beginning of boil
  • 1.5 oz Challenger hops at the beginning of boil
Mash at 152F for 90 minutes and sparge with 9 gallons of water. Add sugar at the beginning of boil along with the hops, and finish at the last fifteen minutes with Irish moss. Boil for about an hour.

  1. any word on the authenticity of this? I have the equip to lay this out, however I'm hesitant to do 10 gallons of a beer if it's not true to the original....

  2. This recipe came from the Graham Wheeler/Protz book title, "Brewing Classic European Beers at Home". It is their recreation, and it's quite good. Is it exactly the same? Well, since I can't get Old Peculiar in the states any longer I can't compare. But it certainly does have that rich, kinda winey old ale taste that the original has.
